English tutoring program reaches 10K students

In India, there are still students who are unable to learn how to speak English, and it will be a big disadvantage for them in the future. Especially, since English is the widely used language in the world. And it would be a big chance for them if they will have an opportunity to learn the language. So Sahasra Deepika had the great idea to have an English tutoring program, where they can teach students about the language.

At crowded government schools around the city, teachers are doing their best with limited resources. Children at these schools are taught in the local language and not in English, as are children from better circumstances, putting them at a huge disadvantage in the job market.

In 2009, Sahasra Deepika started an English tutoring program for 9th standard (grade) students from impoverished schools. With help from Societe Generale and Yuva Global India, this year’s program is reaching approximately 2,900 students. In the past five years, Sahasra Deepika has reached 10,000 students.

The program culminates in a spelling bee every January. In 2015, it will take place on January 24 in Bangalore. The stories of these children are touching and inspiring. They work very hard for several months to learn English vocabulary, grammar and more, and the spelling bee gives the students a chance to be in the spotlight for one night.

“It’s been amazing to see how these kids respond to just the opportunity to do well,” said Sahasra Deepika President Sarva M. Rajendra.

We can’t wait to bring you more information about the spelling bee next year!
