11th Annual Spelling Bee

by Jan 20, 2020News

2020 Spelling Bee | SDIE

The 11th Annual Sahasra Deepika Spelling Bee was held on January 18th at R.V. Teachers College in Jayanagar, Bangalore. One hundred finalists competed to win a college scholarship.

Annual spelling bee contests are always being held in Sahasra Deepika. We believe that this kind of contest will improve the English literacy of our Bangalore students, thus, making them improve their English capability. Also, great prizes are waiting for them that will surely help them in the future. Creating this kind of event for the girls in Bangalore is both enjoyable and educational for them.

“The scholarship to college is really, really an important prize for that child because they come from the lowest ranks of the society,” Rajendra explained. “To be able to get through and get the scholarship to the next stage is really a springboard for their future success.”

After 16 intense rounds, Sneha Somu from Honnaganna Hatti High School won 1st place; Pavitra K from Maragondanahalli High School came in 2nd, and Yatish Nagapushpa, also from Honnaganna Hatti, came in 3rd. Sahasra Deepika was honored by the presence of Chief Guest Seemant Kumar Singh, Inspector General of Police, Bengaluru. During his remarks, he encouraged the children to read and learn, telling them, “Once your knowledge increases, your world will increase.”

The contest is the Sahasra Deepika Outreach Program’s culmination, a unique initiative that helps students from underserved high schools around Bangalore improve their English fluency. Volunteers work with teachers and students for several months to teach them English words from their textbooks. Volvo Bangalore sponsored the contest.

Coverage of the event was provided in the New Indian Express.
